Record amounts of water are being discharged through the Birpur barrage on the Kosi river in Supaul and the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak river in West Champaran, raising concerns of potential flooding in low-lying areas across 14 districts. The increased water flow is a result of heavy rainfall in the surrounding areas, both in Nepal and within the river basins themselves. The discharge through the Birpur barrage has risen from 4.80 lakh cusecs to 5.31 lakh cusecs within a few hours, while the Valmikinagar barrage saw a rise from 3.84 lakh cusecs to 4.49 lakh cusecs. The Kosi river merges with the Ganga river in Katihar district, and the Gandak river flows north of Patna in Saran district, indicating that Bhagalpur and Katihar districts could be severely impacted by the increased flooding. Authorities in Supaul have started urging residents in villages between the eastern and western Kosi embankments to move to higher ground as a precautionary measure. The state water resources department has issued a high alert to district magistrates, instructing them to be prepared and monitor embankments closely, with officials' leaves canceled to ensure readiness for the situation. Predictions suggest the water discharge through the Birpur barrage could reach up to 6.81 lakh cusecs, approaching levels not seen in over five decades. Similarly, the Valmikinagar barrage may reach levels unseen in the past two decades. The 14 districts on high alert include Supaul, Saharsa, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, and Katihar due to the rising Kosi river levels.Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Vaishali, and Samastipur are experiencing flooding from the overflowing Gandak river. Additionally, the Bagmati river is causing significant flood risks in the districts of Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur, among others.
